The International Day of Yoga aims to raise awareness worldwide of the many benefits of practicing yoga.
What is Yoga?
Yoga is a Sanskrit word meaning ‘Unity’ and refers to the fundamental unity at the basis of all diversity. Yoga includes different approaches; postures (Hatha Yoga), action (Karma Yoga), devotion (Bhakti Yoga, and knowledge (Gyana Yoga) all with the theory of purifying the mind and body to realise the unified state of pure consciousness, the essential true nature of the Self, the eternal aspect of life.
Maharishi Mahesh Yogi is renowned for the revival of the ancient tradition of knowledge, the philosophy of Yoga, the Supreme Yoga (Raja Yoga) which brings the individual to Transcendental Consciousness (Samadhi), in a state of Yoga, a unified state of awareness. Maharishi founded the Transcendental Meditation® program, the master key that enables anyone to directly experience Transcendental Consciousness and unfold higher states of consciousness, fulfilling the pinnacle of human development and ultimate purpose of Yoga.
